California Casualty's $2,500 Academic Award Will Go a Long Way for CA Educator
San Mateo, CA, October 22, 2014 … Elizabeth Thompson will have plenty of resources to help her students for the next couple of years. The primary special day class teacher at Fair Oaks Elementary School in Oakdale, California is the latest winner of California Casualty's $2,500 Academic Award.
The California Casualty Academic Award is given to help educators recoup the dollars they use of their own money for classroom and other instructional materials. A recent survey found 99 percent of teachers spent an average of $500 out-of-pocket on supplies and classroom projects.
This is Elizabeth's third year as a full time teacher. Both her parents were teachers and she feels education was in her blood. She admits spending $1,500 of her own funds each year to buy supplies and other necessities. Thanks to the award, she can now purchase a special learning rug, one or two iPads and create a stockpile of snacks for students whose families can't afford them. "This helps out so much," she said. "I teach because I want to make a difference in each child's life. I can now do things that I couldn't do before."
What could you do with $2,500? Entries for the next California Casualty Academic Award are now being taken at www.CalCasAcademicAward.com. The deadline to enter is December 5, 2014, with the winner announced January 2015.
