Deadline Looms for California Casualty’s Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant
San Mateo, CA, January 2, 2014 … Time is running out to win up to $3,000 for your high school’s athletics program. The deadline to apply for a California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant is January 15, 2014.
“California Casualty understands the important role athletics play in the education of our youth,” said Doug Goldberg, Senior Vice President. “We have partnered with education associations for more than 60 years and we want to encourage schools to get their entries in.”
California Casualty will award a total of $100,000 this year, in amounts of $1,000-to-$3,000 to support public high school athletics programs across the nation. Since its inception three years ago, over $200,000 has been given to hundreds of high school athletic programs.
The Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant program was established because education budget cuts have drastically reduced support for school athletics, in some cases forcing programs to shut down altogether. Past Chairman, Thomas R. Brown, an avid sportsman and athlete said, “Athletes learn teamwork, discipline and that hard work pays off. They’re a valuable complement to what’s learned in the classroom.”
Past winners include Pennsylvania’s Oil City Senior High School, where Coach Adam Best used the funds for much needed equipment and uniforms for the baseball program. In his application, the coach noted that fundraising had been difficult in the economically depressed community and overall budget cuts in the school district had been severe. At Round Valley High School, in Springerville, Arizona, the Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant helped to replace 15-year-old basketball team uniforms and to purchase new basketballs.
