California Casualty's $10,000 Firehouse Makeover Gives New Vitality to Northwood, IA

San Mateo, CA, November 21, 2014 … The entire Northwood, Iowa community is benefitting from the latest California Casualty $10,000 Firehouse Makeover, won by volunteer firefighter Ryan Severson in October. The completed makeover provided vibrant new colors for the fire station, comfortable furniture and new cookware and dishes. New tables, chairs and a flat screen TV will aid in training new recruits and will also be more inviting to community groups who use the firehouse for various functions.

"We hope to attract and train more volunteers with the equipment," said Ryan, the Northwood Volunteer Fire Company's treasurer. "This will also allow us to better welcome the people who use the firehouse for pancake breakfasts, meetings, even town elections and voting. It was embarrassing when they came in and saw the old dilapidated chairs and tables."

The award also adds to the heritage of the three generations of Seversons who have volunteered with the department; Ryan's father, brother and now his son.

The 127 year old Northwood Fire Department receives no tax payer funding and is proud to be the only volunteer fire department in Iowa that operates entirely from donations.

"We have a commitment to firefighters, American heroes protecting their communities," said California Casualty Vice President Mike McCormick. "Providing the means to enhance their firehouse is a privilege and an honor."

California Casualty will continue to give back to firefighters, EMTs and other first responders with a new Work Hard/Play Hard contest for 2015. One winner will have the choice of a custom Harley-Davidson Road King or $25,000.  Past prizes included Harley Davidson motorcycles, $10,000, a personal water craft and an ATV. The entry form, rules and information about the 2015 California Casualty Work Hard/Play Hard contest can be found at http://go.calcas.com/harley.
